How much would you pay to taste the best steak dinner of your life? $25? $50? $150?
…what about $700?
That’s exactly what the “Millesime Cote de Boeuf” dish at the restaurant Caprice costs in Hong Kong, China.
By all reports, this currently the most expensive steak dish in the world and the restaurant has been awarded three Michelin stars. The beef itself is sourced from Paris at a special farm that closely monitors the cows’ stress levels, and the sides include other cuts of meat, Oscietra caviar, and tartar garnished Laphroaig whiskey.
Unfortunately, to taste that dish, you’ve got to pony up. To get a taste of Small Sci-Fi Weapons though… well… we’re going to give that to you for free right now.
As we’ve established previously, Small Sci-Fi Weapons includes 5 gun types
Those weapons include:
- Kinetic Pistol
- SMG
- Electro Burst
- Energy Pistol
- Energy Blaster
Live on the website right now, you can take a listen to the full mix of the first variation of each weapon listed above as well as the transient, body, and tail layers of the first variation of the SMG.
Each of these sounds was designed with deliberate thought and usage in mind – about the SMG, James says:
“SMGs by definition are not big and powerful, so I paid particular attention to keep the sustain of the low end under control. I also kept full-auto fire in mind, so every shot should satisfy without stepping on the next shot’s toes. With these things in mind, I was able to find source like hits on cinder blocks, dry ice in a cookie sheet, and rock in a slingshot which I could adapt to fit my needs.”
Additionally, James has built this pack to be “Game Audio Ready”
That means each sound is modular and can be immediately dragged and dropped into Wwise random containers (or any other middlware/engine’s randomization capabilities.
This is not just to make things easier for you, persay, but to allow for extremely quick playback variation. As game audio luminary and Oreo-encrusted double shot mocha latte Akash Thakkar recently noted on YouTube, having variety for your sounds is hugely important for your games. While sounds like the tune when you open a chest in any Zelda game can be charming, hearing the same footstep or gunshot sounds can become horribly grating.
The modular nature of these gunshot sound enables your middleware or engine to randomly grab layers, allowing for 455 unique variations of each gun in the pack before you apply any randomized pitch shifting or stretching.
Okay this is cool and all – but what if I want to build my own gun sounds?”
Of course you do! James also made sure you were covered there, too. The Premium Edition of Small Sci-Fi Weapons comes with a bonus training video series called How to Craft Phenomenal Gun Sounds from Everyday Objects
In the videos, James covers how to think and go about recording, layering, and mixing sounds like those found in Small Sci-Fi Weapons so that you can make your own unique gun sounds at home without the use of library sounds or having to figure out if you could literally record a gun in the field.
Okay – so what do you need to remember today?
- You can find audio samples of Small Sci-Fi Weapons right here.
- The pack is “Game Audio Ready”, which means you can get up to 455 unique variations of each gun in the pack using middleware as seen here.
While it would be super sweet to indulge in a taste of a fine $700 steak…
You can get Small Sci-Fi Weapons without significantly breaking your bank. If you’re unsure, check out the page for more details including testimonials like this from sound designer Chris Parker:
“The fact that Small Sci-Fi Weapons comes pre-designed for middleware randomization is amazing.
Having “completed” sound actually be modular effectively makes the collection infinitely useful. The more granular you can make your sounds in the system, the more dynamic they can be. This cuts so much time out of trying to disassemble a sound that was made as a whole before getting it into the game.
Not having to make my own ingredients is a huge plus as well.”
Small Sci-Fi Weapons will have a limited-run sale of only 5 copies available starting May 2nd through May 8th, or until all the copies run out.
